I recently became obsessed with The Walking Dead (but mainly Daryl) and I didn’t see any good DIY tutorials for his awesome angel wing jacket, so I decided to make my own.
Pictures of Completed Vest
UPDATE: If you would like your own replica send me a message in my inbox. If enough people are interested I might set up an etsy store to sell the vests.
Here are the steps:
old hoodie (or any other thicker white fabric)
leather jacket (mine had a collar somewhat like Andrea’s vest, so it’s a combo deal…whatever)
black acrylic paint
needle & thread
1.) I found the most clear image possible of the wings and essentially traced the design on my computer, but paper works just fine too. That way, I had a better idea of how to space everything. Then draw the basic outline in pen.
2.) After you have the outline, use the image/tracing and draw the individual feathers in pen. It’s easier to do if you start with the overlapping ones first, working your way from the top to the bottom.
3.) Using acrylic paint, outline the wings again. It’s okay if it’s messy - it makes it look more worn.
4.) Once you’ve got the wings painted, use the more dried up paint to create shadows. You can do this by pressing the flat side of the paintbrush onto the dry paint and then lightly dabbing it on the fabric where the feathers overlap one another. Making the shadows also gives it a more dirty look…which is awesome.
5.) Cut out the wings fairly close to the lines.
6.) After cutting out the wings place them on your jacket/vest and pin them where you want them. I effed up my own step and only worried about sewing the first wing on, which meant that to be even they ended up further apart than the wings on Daryl’s jacket. *tears* Measure twice, sew once y’all.
7.) Sew on the wings using just a basic line stitch. My sewing machine couldn’t work through the leather so I had to hand sew it, meaning each wing took about an hour. Also, if your jacket is like mine and cinched at the bottom be sure to keep it stretched out and flat whilst sewing the prevent it from bunching up later.
8.) If you started with a jacket, cut off the arms. Or don’t. Your call.
9.) Go slay some walkers with your crossbow and ride your motorcycle off into the sunset.
